The Drake Passage
After departing from Ushuaia yesterday evening, we awoke this morning in the Southern Ocean, crossing the Drake Passage and heading south, bound for the Antarctic Peninsula some 600 miles distant. To cross the Drake takes two days and leaves us open to the vagaries of the weather in the Southern Ocean. It isn’t for nothing that these latitudes called the ‘furious fifties.’Today the weather gods or goddesses were kind to us. We cruised south under blue skies with the sun glinting off the white backs of the wandering and royal albatrosses, which followed in our wake and were appreciated by those watching from the pool deck (pictured). The day was filled with information and presentations or searching for marine life, with time to read a book or take a nap. A lazy day to rest and prepare for the adventure that lies ahead of us.
