Ensenada Grande and Los Islotes
Thank your maker for this miraculous beach, bathed in the pale light of solitude. You really cannot imagine the magic of chollas and octotillos by the sea. Rose-colored glasses do no justice to life on this expedition. We’ve seen so many things; it is difficult to remember them all, but this morning we are land bound, hiking from the beach up an arroyo, soaking in the Sonoran Desert and the steady rain. Had we been here in the blistering sun, we would have missed the flowers, and the prickly pears swollen to bursting. A dreary day does not rob us of the wonder of this place. Great whales are the sorcery that leads us to the ocean. Time now, however, to swim among the sea lions. We drop into the water to pretend we belong, and the lions allow us our fantasy for an occasional, beautiful moment. Missed by some for a time were the peregrine falcons, sitting on a saguaro, reminding all beings present to beware! You cannot forget that life is fleeting…. So savor each day, despite the sheets of rain. Much can be missed in the wet, but wonder is everywhere.
This journey nears its end, and rain drives us inside for a quiet afternoon. Was any group of people less unhappy with a rainy day than we were when 500 common dolphins came to dance with us? A few seemed to salsa in the air as they leapt from the water, following us for an hour. Beautiful. Amazing things like this cannot be lived through books – mere stenographers cannot communicate the vibrant life we have lived for the last week. Experience like this cannot be bought, only discovered.
