It is our last full day here on board the Delfin II in the Amazon of Peru. Our home away from home. So comfortable and pleasant. We have come to love this place. Not only our cabins and the food, but also the skiff rides and the Amazon rain forest itself. We have learned how to find sloths, where to expect a red-capped cardinal, and to see the smiles of the fishermen we pass. Today, we had many new and exciting discoveries to further add to our love of this place.
For the morning, the Zapote River was our destination. A slow meander was on tap, as life was everywhere. A few more sloths were seen, always in an interesting position. A new mammal for the trip, and a rat? But oh yes, a very cute one. This was the yellow-crowned brush-tailed rat. A long name for a little critter, but very cute peering out its resting hole. A few squirrel monkeys, and more of the incredible monk saki.
On our way back to the Delfin II, we spotted a huge flock of dusky-headed parakeets feeding on the leftovers in an old rice field. A noisy bunch for sure with a blur of wings, and nearly all eyes are focused on the madness. But even closer, there is some movement. A capybara! Our third sighting of capybara of the week! They are very unusual to see here, so amazing to again see this largest of the rodent family.
In the afternoon, a light rain descended upon us as we entered Supay stream. It is fitting to end an amazing week in the rain forest with a bit of rain. Sure, it slowed the activity some, but we still managed to see numerous birds, a few sloths, and another troop of squirrel monkeys.
We return to the comforts of the Delfin II, and another flavorful meal. The talented crew goes all out tonight, not only with the food, but with the music. Soon, nearly everyone is up and dancing, celebrating our final night in our luxurious home in the Amazon.
