This morning we awoke in the historic Straits of Magellan, named after the famous expedition on which they were discovered and during which Captain Juan Sebastian Elcano completed the first circumnavigation of the globe. We positioned the ship in the lee of Isla Carlos, Francisco Coloane Marine Park, and enjoyed a very pleasant Zodiac cruise in calm waters. Dolphins, geese, cormorants, turkey vultures, caracaras, and a kingfisher greeted us as we explored this wild island. After lunch, we navigated into the serene Lissan Cove and prepared the kayaks for a fun adventure. A few small islands were ours to enjoy for the day. Finally, our staff put on an entertaining recap to delight in the day’s journey.

The Drake Passage (northbound)
The sea gods were kind to us today for our northbound crossing of the Drake Passage. We woke up on the gently rolling waves and icy blue waters of the Southern Ocean, and the still line of the horizon surrounded us as we were treated to an amazing brunch. The conditions were perfect for observing wildlife; throughout the day we spotted fin whales, humpbacks, many kinds of seabirds and albatrosses, and even two errant icebergs! A serene, restful day at sea.

Pleneau and Petermann Islands
Today was our last full day in Antarctica before heading back north to Ushuaia. We spent the day with two gentoo penguin colonies, one on Pleneau Island and one on Petermann Island. As I reflect on our voyage, penguins come to mind first. There are few animals on the planet whose charisma and charm touch our souls more. With that said, what better way to celebrate our time with these wonderful creatures than to showcase some of the penguins we saw today.
