Misty Fjords National Monument represented the last day of the Alaska season for National Geographic Sea Bird in 2018. This magnificent fjord system certainly lived up to its name; the steep-walled cliffs shrouded in eerie clouds and light were a photographer’s dream!
While some of us kayaked the fjords, others practiced their stand-up paddleboard skills, and still others enjoyed the sights from our fleet of expedition landing crafts. Dog salmon had spawned in the rivers at the head of the fjord, and their spent bodies filled the sea all around us and did not go unnoticed by the eagles, gulls, Steller sea lions, and harbor seals—all of which were concentrating on turning those dead fish into a meal!
