We began our journey aboard National Geographic Sea Cloud today with a sail through the Cyclades and a sail introduction. We learned the intricate workings of “hitting the riggings” and watched National Geographic Sea Cloud crew go aloft and set the sails. Once all the sails we up, we were introduced to the staff and guides, followed by a presentation on photo composition. Afterward, we had a bit of time to walk around the ship, bask in the sun, or rest.
A beautiful lunch was served on the Lido Deck, which offered views of Santorini. We heard presentations on “Why the Greeks Became Great” and the history of the area. Then the crew took in the sails and we were surprised with an impromptu swim call from the ship.
The first dip in the Aegean was enjoyed by all—if not in the water then while watching from on deck. After drying off and putting on our best, the captain’s welcome cocktail party began. He introduced key members of his crew and we cheered to the great trip ahead. The dinner bell rang and yet another delicious National Geographic Sea Cloud meal was served followed by after-dinner stargazing on Spanker Deck.

It’s hard to believe it is the last day of our magical cruise along the Dalmatian Coast. A visit to the beautiful island of Hvar, the “lavender capital” of Croatia, was the perfect way to end our voyage. Sea Cloud slipped through the narrow channel between the Pakleni Islands and dropped anchor just in front of the old Venetian harbor of the town of Hvar. We tendered into the pier for an early morning walking tour of this delightful town full of Venetian-inspired Renaissance palaces with pointed trefoil windows and ground-floor loggias. Cafes, bars, and lavender stands lined one side of the quay, while yachts and catamaran ferries from the Split jostled for position on the other. Our guides took us along the seawall and out to the Franciscan Monastery to see their little physic garden with its 500-year-old cypress tree and the impressive 16th century painting of the “Last Supper” that dominates the monk’s refectory. This magnificent work was done by a Venetian artist of the school of Paolo Veronese. The artist was shipwrecked on the island and nursed back to health in the monastery. We wound our way back to the main square, then climbed up through the narrow Porta Maestra that was once the main entrance to the fortified section of the town. We stopped in front of the small Benedictine convent, where five cloistered nuns still make lace from the fibers of the agave plant. After a visit to the basilica of St. Stephens on the main square, some of us fanned out on our own to explore the alleyways leading up to the Venetian fortress that protects the city, while others chose to buy a few lavender products or just sit and enjoy a cool drink in one of the many bars along the quay. All too soon, the tenders arrived to shuttle us back to the ship so we could partake in the famous “parmesan wheel” pasta feast on the Lido Deck. As we moved away from Hvar, the captain had the sailors go aloft for one last afternoon under sail.
Islands, in their isolation, tend to preserve unique cultural heritages, and Korčula is not an exception. Almost fifty kilometers in length and eight kilometers in width, the island has maintained medieval traditions, such as the brotherhoods and the Moreska dance, that are already gone from mainland Croatia and from other parts of the Mediterranean. We visited the museum of the brotherhood of All Saints, the oldest of the three brotherhoods of the island. This organization has two hundred members, all men, only Catholic and from Korčula. They were founded in the year 1301 by people of different social statuses; in the confraternity, they were all equal. They helped and buried the poor, visited the ill, took care of widows and orphans, and collected funds for the dowries of young girls from poor families. This brotherhood included a great amount of the town’s shipbuilders and woodcarvers who have worked in Korčula’s shipyards throughout the centuries. During Easter, the Brothers of the three Brotherhoods (All Saints, Saint Michael, and Saint Rocco) wear traditional gowns and carry huge candles of pure wax, some weighing 90 kg. They also carry stars and crosses and are accompanied by church songs in the old city, creating a unique, mystical atmosphere. Good Friday is the most important procession for Korčula. Edith, our local guide, told us, “Traditions keep us together, they are especially important for the young people.” Within these walls, there are eight churches and one cathedral with a fabulous Tintoretto painting. Edith guided us through the town (inhabited by eighty people today), unraveling its mysteries which are centuries old. She took us to the location where the house of the family Polo was allegedly erected in the 13th century. Marco Polo could have been from Korčula...and why not, this was part of the Venetian territory. Another ancient tradition that has survived the isolation of the island is the Moreska dance. We enjoyed the performance in an open-air theater. The Black King entered, dragging the captured “Bula,” a maiden in chains. He tried to persuade her to respond to his advances, but she replied that she was in love with the Red King. The two kings and their armies confronted each other, and the battle escalated from taunts, to the kings in battle, to both armies clashing. We enjoyed a mixture of solos and varying rhythms throughout the seven different dances. The Black soldiers were eventually surrounded and defeated, and the Red King rescued the quiet Bula. When Edith described the shape of the city, which looks like a fish from an aerial view, she said, “The western half of Korčula has straight streets, to let the Mistral winds cool the city in the summertime, while the eastern part has curved streets, for blocking the Bura, or northern cold wind circulation.” Today we indeed met the Bura, we sailed with the Bura, and what a spectacular sailing day we had with 35 knot winds. We had it all today!
Today, we started our day in Dubrovnik with a city tour with our local guides. We observed the outside of Rector’s Palace and the interior of the 13th century Franciscan monastery, and we took a walk along the city’s walls. We spent 45 minutes walking along the walls with beautiful views of the St. Lawrence Fortress and surrounding areas. After our tour, we had free time to explore the city. A Viking television series is being filmed in the city, and we got to see the film sets and actors. Sea Cloud’s pool opened up before teatime in the afternoon, and guests were able to swim in the Adriatic Sea for the first time during the trip! Our historian, Robyn, gave a presentation on the Venetian Empire. This was followed by a Klapa performance by a local a cappella group that performed on the Lido deck. For dinner, we enjoyed a Filipino feast on the Lido deck with the option to tender back to the city afterwards.
