The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on January 11, 2017.

Our second full day in Havana focused on learning and the “people to people” experience.  Most of the group spent the morning in the artistic community of Alexis Leiva “Kcho” and Jose Fuster, and got to talk to the artists directly, while others were meeting with car mechanics and cigar specialists.

After a lunch on the rooftop of the Capri Hotel, we divided into two smaller groups.  One went to see the Revolution Museum and meet with faculty at the University of Havana.  The other had intimate meetings with an environmental engineer at a conservational foundation, and later a round-table discussion with young journalists from the up-and-coming OnCuba magazine.  Meeting with these young journalists was a highlight of the trip, as they were very honest and upfront about how Cubans have access to media and information in Cuba.

Our finale dinner took place on the rooftop of Hotel Lincoln in the heart of Central Havana.  Here we were treated to a private concert by the internationally-celebrated band, El Septeto Nacional.  Director Frank Oropesa gave us a brief history of the origin of their “son” (traditional Cuban music), before their two-set dazzling performance.  The band lived up to their reputation, and few guests could resist the temptation of dancing the night away on our last night in Havana.
