Petersburg

Another day of beautiful, warm sunshine in Southeast Alaska. Who would have thought we’d need sunscreen in a temperate rainforest? We woke in a place called Thomas Bay, an area known for a legend where people go missing, supposedly due to hairy monkey men, creatures with bright red eyes.

We ventured out this morning for our first day of hiking and kayaking at Cascade Creek. We were glad to have our boots with us as our first step out of the Zodiac was into some nice, mushy, boot-sucking mud! The legend stood unconfirmed as we never saw any of the monkey men creatures. As soon as we stepped into the forest we did see a huge porcupine up in a tree. We made our way up a little further and stopped to gaze upon a stunning waterfall. It was roaring full of life into the rushing stream below. Some of us even found a rough skinned newt.

We had just as much fun out in the water kayaking in the warm sunshine. Paddling around a small island, we stopped every now and then to get a glimpse of the harbor seals swimming all around us. On such a clear day the scenery was amazing. One guest said to me, “There’s just so much to look at, it’s indescribable.”

After our morning adventures, we spent the afternoon in the little fishing community of Petersburg. Petersburg is a Norwegian town that is now home to a flourishing fishing fleet. We all went our separate ways as the options were endless. Some of us took Zodiacs to Kupreanof Island for a hike going up to a bog. Others rode bikes and spent the afternoon cruising around the streets of Petersburg. Many adventurers chose a float plane excursion, which circled above LeConte Glacier. The landscape was unbelievable, especially today with Devil’s Thumb in clear view! The rest of us spent the afternoon relaxing, shopping and basking in the sun.

Back on board we enjoyed a fresh Alaskan crab feast as we sailed towards Tracy Arm Fjord. We hurried to the bow after our dinner to take in the gorgeous, pink and red sunset. As the saying goes, “A red sky at night is a sailor’s delight.”
