Bahia Magdalena

The moon’s light still dancing on the water’s surface delights us, as we yoga devotee’s, gather on the sun deck for our early morning stretch class. The cool breeze that brushes our cheeks and the radiant shades of pink to orange at the horizon, assure us of a spectacular day here in Boca de Soledad, or “The Mouth of Solitude.” The buzz of excitement builds as the anticipated Zodiac tours, in search for gray whales, comes near.

Our search is successful! To our amusement a playful juvenile entertains us with as many as seven consecutive breaches, while in close proximity, mama and baby leisurely amble by. The afternoon’s whale watching is soothing and tranquil, as we watch a single gray whale rise up to the surface then gracefully plunge back down, in what appeared to be a rhythmic pattern.

All are captivated by the close view of this spectacular creature. Its barnacle-laden skin is a mottled pale gray. As we say our goodbyes and move along we encounter a group of bottlenose dolphins. We watch them bow ride and dive in groups of two or more, from what appeared to be every direction.

Feeling complete, we return to the National Geographic Sea Bird for a Mexican fiesta including local entertainment by “Los Coyotes de Magdalena.” Laughter and merriment is shared by all throughout the evening.
