Floreana Island

It is the 6th day of our expedition in the Galápagos Islands. We have seen so, so much everywhere, at any time, and we are still impressed by the new things we saw today on Floreana Island. This morning we started paying a visit to the legendary post office barrel located on the north side of Floreana. Here, the highlight of the site is the human history such as the voyage of the Beagle and Darwin’s visit back in 1835 as well as whale hunters, seal hunters and pirates, each of them with their own stories.

Floreana has many places to visit, and this morning we had a Zodiac ride around Champion Islet where we found a rocky cliff teeming with life of all kinds, especially sea birds and sea lions and later on we all headed to the snorkeling site where we found calm warm water with myriad of fish of all sizes and colors. In this same place we had sea lions, very playful as ever.

In the afternoon we repositioned the National Geographic Islander off Punta Cormorant for another part of the expedition. Punta Cormorant is located on the north side of Floreana and offers conditions for activities such as kayaking along the cliff with a majestic landscape full of sally light foot crabs and birds like blue footed boobies and sea lions.

Late in the afternoon we landed at Punta Cormorant, this time for a walk along the shore of the flamingo lagoon. Here we were delighted by a flock of pink greater flamingos peacefully feeding and others breeding with the presence of tiny flamingo chicks. This walk ended eventually on a beautiful coral sandy beach full of sea turtle nests and also sea turtles resting in shallow waters and waiting for the dark hours of the night to make their way up the beach to lay their eggs.

It was a marvelous day!
