Cuverville Island & Port Lockroy
Today was a day for exploring the stunning scenery in the area around the Gerlache and Neumeyer Straits along the Danco Coast. Monstrous peaks loomed overhead all day, while rivers of ice surrounded us as they flowed down to the ocean. Clearing skies with patchy light added to the drama of the day as we enjoyed two wonderful locations.
In the morning we explored Cuverville Island by water and land. Kayakers paddled amongst blue bergs while penguins porpoised by and seals rested on the shore. Gentoo Penguins covered much of the exposed rock on the island, and various sized chicks were certainly entertaining. A few intrepid hikers reached the summit of the island, and from 820 feet or so, the spectacular views were well worth the effort. A 360 degree vista makes one realize there is no other place like Antarctica.
In the afternoon we visited Port Lockroy and viewed the old British Base that is now a museum. Mailing postcards and buying a few souvenirs certainly was a bit different, especially while surrounded by more nesting Gentoo Penguins. At nearby Jougla Point, Antarctic Shags joined the Gentoos, and many large chicks were observed. Some were already molting into their flight feathers, and practiced flying a bit by flapping into the light breeze.
After dinner we passed south through the Lemaire Channel. Once again, stunning scenery, rivers of ice, and eerie light. There is no other place like Antarctica.
