Isabela Island
This was just outstanding a day! We had a variety of options to choose from to explore the southern part of Isabela Island, including the human settlement of Puerto Villamil and the great volcano of Sierra Negra. We looked at the intense conservation efforts made by the inhabitants of the place to save the famous Galápagos tortoises. We learned about a cruel reality that took place in our very recent history during the 1946-1959 penal settlement here and saw with our own eyes the remains of the “wall of tears” a prison that was intended never to be finished; we relaxed as we enjoyed the picturesque small fishing town that lines a spectacular long white beach; for the more adventurous and active, we undertook a 10-mile hike to Sierra Negra Volcano and its most recent volcanic eruption in 1979. All in all, there was a huge variety of different activities for us to pick and choose from, and tailor the day to our desires.
It is always a pleasure to feel the coolness of the Puerto Villamil beach after experiencing the equatorial sun, and that is exactly what our guests did. This 3-km long beach is truly something out of the most enticing postcard with color and nature everywhere you look: soft and sandy white beach, turquoise ocean and a cold refreshing drink while the breeze with its sounds whispers on the skin, the pulsating breaking of the waves and silence of isolation… What more could we ask for?
And it all started here on this pier, welcoming us to an adventure; the Galápagos adventure.
The sun set as we returned to the Islander, where our guests eagerly compared notes and we all agreed we had a great time in Isabela Island.
