Floreana Island

After all the excitement we had on the western side of the archipelago, we’re back to the calmer southern part of the Galápagos. The island of Floreana carries an immense array of human history, so we made our first stop at the old Post Office Barrel on the north eastern shore of the island. We shared some stories and we were introduced into part of the human history of the enchanted island where incredible sagas took place with pirates, explorers and settlers.

Our next destination brought us to a paradisiacal snorkeling place, the small islet of Champion. There we were part of the enlightenment of the sea lions that once again reminded us we are no match for them in the ocean. The calm seas and the many colors of the underwater life were more than enough to make us forget about the cold water. After that, we set off on an expedition to find the elusive Charles mockingbird and even though the little bird was reluctant at the beginning, it showed itself a couple of times. Success!

At Punta Cormoran once again we lavished in the serenity of nature watching some wading birds and listening to the melodies of the wind passing through the branches of the dry forest trees. During the last four years conditions have been tough with little, if any rain. As a result some plants had difficult times. But today we saw our endemic cut leaf daisy sprouting here and there and a little one no more than five inches in blossom!

Our content didn’t stop there. We saw blue-footed boobies mating and baby sea turtles emerging from their nests. The magic of life manifested in all its expressions, and we were just standing in front of it, admiring such a power. Day after day the Galápagos are teaching us something new, something that most times goes beyond our comprehension. However these magical moments help us understand that mystery of mysteries.
