Today we began our Greenland-based part of the expedition, disembarking the National Geographic Explorer onto the dock of the Sisimiut community. Cloaked in fog, rain, and heavy winds the city was still bustling with life and there were plenty of activities waiting for guests within the city. Morning excursions included a natural history hike to Tele Island, city walks, a photo walk, and a bus tour.
While the majority explored the terrestrial terrain, the undersea team braved the roaring sea to navigate the underwater world. Vibrant colors akin to the brightly painted homes in Sisimiut were under every blade of kelp. On board after lunch, the Greenlandic School of Clothing Education put on a beautiful demonstration, sharing their knowledge and practice of keeping traditional clothing production alive in the modern day. Afterwards, a local kayaker put on a traditional demonstration of paddling and flipping over within the kayak, and rolling through the 36F waters, with ease and grace. It was quite a show to wrap up our time onshore.
