Another spectacular day in Southeast Alaska! The day started bright and early when expedition leader Travis gave us a wakeup call at 0600. Humpback whales and hundreds of bald eagles were taking advantage of the morning fishing on the north end of Kuiu Island. Our guests enjoyed a delightful morning stretch with Jessica on the sun deck, and the sun was out in full force all day today!
Guests were offered a trifecta of activities for our morning in Security Bay. The Zodiac cruises did not disappoint, and guests enjoyed dozens of sea otters with their pups, bald eagles galore, harbor seals, and humpback whales. Kayaking from the beach was warm, sunny, and calm, and many guests went for their first Alaskan bushwhack. They checked out banana slugs and a plethora of Southeast Alaskan plants, including mosses, fungus, and lichens. They topped it off with a derelict barge transformed into the world’s largest planter.
We spent the afternoon cruising north up Chatham Strait toward Warm Springs Bay. We picked up Alaska Whale Foundation’s director Andy Szabo, and he gave an informative and inspiring presentation about the area’s humpback whale research. Alaska wasn’t done yet! An appearance from some perfectly timed Bigg’s orcas at the end of Andy’s presentation kept us excited and delighted until dinner. It couldn’t have been a more perfect day in Alaska, one neither I nor the guests will soon forget.
