The first day of the expedition started off with a morning at sea, cruising through the beautiful Sea of Cortez. National Geographic Venture worked north, sailing down the middle of the San Jose Channel and everyone kept a sharp eye out for wildlife. Just after lunch, the captain spotted a small pod of short-finned pilot whales. As we looked at the blackfish there was also a great sighting of a shark at the surface.

In the afternoon everyone went ashore to explore Puerto Los Gatos. There were many adventures to be had. Onshore there were opportunities to do an aerobic hike and later on an informative naturalist/photo hike. Everyone was even invited to try beach yoga lead by Exhale wellness specialist Jesse Lujan. The water was calling some people and there were many chances to play in the ocean. Before day’s end, all aboard people had a chance to snorkel, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard.
