Endless strings of double-crested cormorants streamed by, heading north from their roosts towards Magdalena Bay as we set out in the morning. We estimated that there numbered somewhere between seven and ten thousand birds passing the ship over the course of thirty minutes.
Around the same time, coaches left the dock for an organic farm outside of the sleepy port town of Puerto San Carlos. Adrian, a native of Mexico, expertly interpreted the complexities of operating a farm in an arid climate.
Another excursion offered was a naturalist-led birding walk around the town from the dock. The coasts of Magdalena Bay, with its mangroves and coastal areas, hosts high numbers of birds.
The final afternoon was designated for packing, reviewing the voyage, discussing environmental issues with staff, and celebrating. We sang along to the duo Los Coyotes and enjoyed a traditional Mexican meal. In the morning, we will say farewell to this group of people. It was an amazing voyage on board National Geographic Venture.
