A day in Petersburg is always full of an abundance of activities, enthusiasm, wonder, and joy. Dock tours, hikes on Kupreanof Island, locally-guided hikes, cultural hikes, bike rides, free time in town — they add up to a jam-packed day filled with wide-eyed excitement to see what a small Southeast Alaskan fishing town is all about.
I was lucky to join guests on the cultural hike, which was filled with information about the lifestyle of Alaska and the Tlingit culture. We passed through a portion of the Tongass National Forest and along the path by a muskeg. This afforded the wonderful opportunity to learn from our guide and to observe the smaller things that make Southeast Alaska special — including a unique carnivorous plant, the sundew.
With adventure fulfilled, at least for the day, guests came back all aboard National Geographic Quest to have their fill of a locally caught Dungeness crab fest.
