Today we explored the wonderfully wild Pacaya River. We observed horned screamers, blue-and-yellow macaws, laughing falcons, a ferruginous pygmy owl, red-bellied macaws, and the unique hoatzin, a true Amazonian icon. After a couple of hours exploring, we found a nice spot where all three skiffs got together and we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast in the jungle!
Later, we boarded our skiffs again and headed back into the Pacaya. Several guests opted for an “Amazon plunge” while some pink river dolphins swam a short distance away. Others that chose not to jump into the river continued exploring into the Pacaya and watched several family groups of the large and appropriately named red howler monkey. Their bright red-orange bodies stood out among the green color of the treetops; they were stoically waiting under the rain that had started to fall. Our way back to Delfin II under the rain reminded us that we are exploring one of the rainiest places on Earth during the rainy season, and that rain is a blessing that brings life to this unique place called Amazonia.
