Today started with a continental landing in Neko Harbor to enjoy the glacier, a few Gentoo penguin colonies and a spectacular view. The sun was shining brightly and despite the thermometer reading 32°F, it was warm enough to explore the coastline without a jacket or even gloves. The pulverized pink granite beach offered a more colorful landing than the icy world we have thus far encountered. The ephemeral context of the flowing glaciers provided a memorable backdrop and soon became a dynamic spectator sport for those seeking a glimpse of the icy show as the glacier calved exploding with sound and energy.

Many of us enjoyed an unexpected diversion as the steep climb to the ridgeline was rewarded with an exhilarating slide down the slope.

Zodiac cruisers in Neko Harbor observed two humpback whales resting among the artistic ice formations, while the underwater divers captured entertaining footage of the Gentoo penguins splashing in the shallows.

After lunch we sailed past Gonzalez Videla, an active Chilean base, as we changed anchorage to Paradise Bay. The Captain parked the ship against the rocky cliffs for a close up view of the Antarctic cormorant nests, rich green moss, rainbow of lichens and Antarctic hair grass. Oxidized copper bands painted the cliff side and the glacier displayed a vast array of turrets, caves and precariously leaning towers. Crabeater seals lounged on the nearby ice floes and some guests were fortunate to spot a yawning leopard seal during the scenic zodiac tour.

Our day ended with an asado dinner as the Explorer nestled in the fast ice at Port Lockroy for the night.
