The day began with a brilliant red sunrise over the Baja California peninsula as National Geographic Venture cruised through the ship channel from Puerto San Carlos toward our morning anchorage.

We had the opportunity to explore a mangrove community at Man O’ War Cove on Magdalena Island by kayak and Zodiac. Overhead were streams of cormorants flying from their overnight roosts to fishing grounds.

The ship repositioned a short distance to the north during lunch. We went ashore and crossed the dunes to the aptly named Sand Dollar Beach, where waves rolled in from the open Pacific Ocean along a vast expanse of sand in Santa Maria Bay.

Octavio Maravilla gave a presentation on gray whales to prepare us for our coming adventures. We look forward to more wonderful days ahead!
