This morning we docked at the Indonesian town of Kupang, the largest city and port on the island of Timor. Once we disembarked, we were met by a welcoming cultural performance on the dock as we walked past the traditionally dressed dancers along a red carpet. It was quite the welcome!
Once loaded into air-conditioned vans, we started our journey across town to a traditional market, complete with a police escort no less. The market was jam-packed full of people and fresh produce of all types.
Our next stop was the beach where we were greeted by several different groups from Timor and neighboring islands, all in their traditional dress. They sang and danced while guests sat in the shade drinking from fresh coconuts. It was all great fun, especially when guests and staff joined in amongst the locals to dance and have photos taken with them. What a wonderful introduction to Indonesia!
