We departed Tobermory early to head south to Craignure, which is the main ferry terminal for the Isle of Mull. Upon arrival, we boarded a coach for a picturesque journey across the island to Fionnphort, where we hopped on a 10-minute ferry to the island of Iona, known as the "Cradle of Christianity." The island has a population of roughly 80 people and covers five square miles. Saint Columba arrived on the island in 563 AD after being banished from his homeland. He brought 12 disciples with him who were all focused on spreading the gospel to the native Picts in an effort to convert them to Christianity.
Upon arriving on Iona, we took a short walk along a paved path with our local guide who gave us an in-depth tour of the site starting with the ruins of the 13th-century nunnery, the cemetery, and the historic medieval abbey.
We walked back towards the ferry terminal for lunch at a nearby restaurant called Martyrs Bay before returning by ferry to our coach. Next, we took a bus ride to Duart Castle, the 14th-century seat of the Clan MacLean that juts out into the Sound of Mull at the entrance to Loch Linnhe. After returning to the ship we sailed on to Oban, where several guests had dinner shoreside at local seafood restaurants.
