In the center of the Galápagos is North Seymour, an island with exquisite wildlife. A number of species of sea birds nest here, including one species of boobies and two species of frigatebirds.
Magnificent frigates and great frigates have chosen the island to live and nest because fish are plentiful in the surrounding waters. At this time of the year, we saw many males with their red pouches fully inflated to attract females, although others were already engaged in incubating eggs, taking care of young as well as feeding them.
Blue-footed boobies also nest here. We did not see many because this is the end of the current nesting season, but we saw a few young boobies waiting for their parents to bring back food.
Another attraction of North Seymour are land iguanas, dinosaur-looking reptiles that have lived on the island since the 1930s when they were rescued from near extinction due to predation and human activities on the neighboring island of Baltra. There were plenty of them, proof of a fast natural recovery.
Without a doubt, one of the best attractions of the Galápagos is the sea lion, an enigmatic creature well-known for its charm. People always end up taking one more picture of them no matter how many pictures have already been taken. Some groups witnessed a recent birth—such an incredible experience.
After some navigation we arrive at the island of Rabida, which stands out from the others for having a red coloration due to its large amount of iron. Sea lions come to this red beach to rest and, at this time of the year, to mate and give birth. Sea lions are a popular attraction because they will play with you in the water. Snorkelers also enjoyed swimming with turtles, colorful fish, rays, and the occasional friendly shark.
Guests who chose not to go in the water enjoyed glass-bottom boat excursions and kayaking along the shore of this island where plenty of wildlife is found. Pelicans, boobies, herons, and sea lions make these visits quite amazing. The day finished with a walk on the red island for a phenomenal landscape in combination with interesting wildlife and a magical sunset.
