As we woke in Inverie on the Knoydart peninsula, the sunshine broke through the clouds, painting the wonderful mountainous surroundings in dappled rays. As we left the region that morning, we spotted a majestic white-tailed eagle overhead, Britain’s largest bird.
Our first sailing took us to the beautiful, community-owned Isle of Eigg. We explored the nature-rich island—both by bike and on foot—along the wild coastline and into a beautiful patch of ancient Celtic rain forest.
After departing Eigg, we set out into the waters of the Sea of the Hebrides, around the Ardnamurchan peninsula, and began to look for marine wildlife. On our way, we saw a plethora of beautiful birds, including diving gannets, kittiwakes, soaring Manx shearwaters, great skuas (also known as bonxies in Scotland), fulmars, and guillemots. Our journey into the Sound of Mull was topped off by a brief but wonderful harbor porpoise encounter!
Upon arrival in the colorful harbor town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, the group split up between a photo walk (complete with a lesson on how to best capture the picturesque colorful houses) and a scenic nature walk to the Tobermory Stevenson’s lighthouse.
Back on board, Pippa from the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust gave a presentation about the amazing marine wildlife that can be found in the seas around the Hebrides. It was a great end to a busy day.
