The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on January 4, 2017.

Only 90 miles from Florida, a trip to Cuba is like time travel. We would soon discover that this is not your typical vacation. We are here for total immersion, to learn about the culture, and to meet the people. This well-preserved Colonial city is amazingly photogenic, and images are everywhere.

Our first full day was spent exploring old town, the most photogenic part of the city. After the walking tour during the morning, we had lunch.  Then it was cars, cigars, and a visit to Ernest Hemingway’s favorite haunts. We visited a famous cigar shop, a mechanic’s garage that restores classic cars, then drove through town in Chevy and Ford cars from the 1950s.

Meanwhile, others toured the Hemingway Estate, Finca Vigía, then stopped at his favorite fishing village. Here, to our amazement, we met the last living fisherman who knew Ernest Hemingway personally, and had taken him fishing on many occasions.

Back at the historic Hotel National de Cuba, we enjoyed Cuban cocktails, smoked or smelled the aroma of the world’s most famous cigars, and enjoyed a delicious Cuban dinner under royal palms swaying in a gentle, tropical breeze.

It’s an important time to be in Cuba, and to tell the story of our experience. Each image records an important moment in the history of this island nation.
