Rain and wind didn’t stop guests from having a remarkable day here in Haida Gwaii. Groups boarded local charter buses and headed north to the small town of Old Masset to visit the carving studios of two local craftsman, Jim Hart and Christen White. Despite both resident artists being out-of-town to accept recognition awards, their families and pupils welcomed us with open arms. From learning family stories and the relationships behind different poles, to watching traditional dances while enjoying fresh seafood chowder – the hospitality was above and beyond. Guests had opportunities to learn different pole carving techniques, to witness a canoe dugout in progress, and even to join in on the dance floor.
On the way home, we stopped to observe the wonder of Balance Rock for a fun photographic opportunity and to learn more about the geological origins of the islands. No matter the forecast, adventure is had aboard National Geographic Sea Bird!
