Española

We started our last day in paradise with an early morning kayak outing. Our “do it all group” joined us and greatly enjoyed paddling along the most beautiful shoreline of Gardner Bay. The playful sea lions that accompanied us were our delight on this early outing. Once back onboard and after breakfast, we all geared up to go snorkeling around Gardner Islet. Here beautiful cold, clear waters were waiting for us. Several schools of colorful tropical fish were observed and of course, our friends the playful sea lions came along too.

Gardner Bay has a spectacular white sandy beach which we shared with lots of sea lions, mocking birds and pelicans. Meanwhile a second round of kayakers exercised and worked off their breakfast along the rocky shores observing the wild life.

On our afternoon hike at Punta Suarez, we walked a rocky trail surrounded by nesting blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies and the exotic waved albatross which is endemic to the island of Española. Colorful marine iguanas, curious hood mocking birds and large lava lizards are some of the endemic animals belonging only to this very special and fantastic island. At the end of the trail we watched a Galápagos hawk feeding its fluffy white chick on prey: a baby marine iguana!

This day on Española was, without a doubt, an excellent finale and farewell for our fabulous week in the Galápagos.
