Manuel Antonio National Park

On our last full day aboard the Sea Voyager, the morning finds us sailing towards one of the most beautiful places we have visited: Manuel Antonio National Park, a place that definitely shows the perfection of Costa Rica. Manuel Antonio National Park is a wonderful place located on the south Pacific coast of Costa Rica that protects tropical moist forest. It was created in 1972 and was only about 2000 acres, that extension is not big enough to hold such a big variety of species; favorably the park was enlarge in 2000, but at a little over 4000 acres, it remains the country’s second smallest national park; it is also the refuge for a wide variety of animals.

Right after breakfast, part of the group started boarding the Zodiacs to get to a public beach and take a short bus ride to the place where we lived the adrenaline of the zip lines, a tour where we could appreciate the forest from the canopy and literally flew through the trees a long a very well designed system of platforms and cables mostly from tree to tree. During the tour we had the great opportunity of spotting green and black poisonous dart frogs, some green iguanas, black spiny tailed iguanas, leaf cutter ants, cracking butterflies, huge grass hopers and other colorful butterflies. Meanwhile the rest of the group enjoyed the morning at the park.

After a well deserved lunch in the lounge, we returned to the park. While some walked along an easy and mostly flat trail called the “Sloth Valley” the rest took a stronger hike along another trail called “Cathedral Point. This point has an interesting geological formation called “Tombolo,” an island that got joined to the main land with a sand bar thanks to the action of the ocean. During the walk our guests were lucky to find three-toed sloths, two-toed sloths, agoutis, deer, white faced capuccin monkeys, squirrel monkeys, hermit crabs, jesus christ lizards, raccoons, coatis, some birds and one of the highlights an eyelash pit viper! After the walks some took the last chance to swim in the Costarican Pacific Ocean!

Back on board we had the farewell Captain’s cocktail hour and the farewell dinner, going to bed a little bit sad because our wonderful week is over and at the same time happy because of all the beautiful and amazing memories we take with us.
