Ford’s Terror
On deck this morning we watched as the Sea Lion pushed through dense ice in the fjord known as Tracy Arm. Captain Martin was at the helm. Waterfalls streaked down the impressive rock faces that towered thousands of feet above us. An occasional harbor seal poked its gray rounded head above the water’s surface, looking at us with what appeared to be a great deal of curiosity.
Directly after breakfast we boarded Zodiacs to explore the shoreline, feel the fresh mist of waterfalls, and enjoy the splendid azure face of the Sawyer glacier. A massive reservoir of ice, the Stikine ice field feeds the Sawyer and many other glaciers, including the LeConte which we visited earlier in the voyage.
Constantly changing though always striking scenery kept us busy through the middle of the day as we moved down Tracy Arm and into Endicott Arm. By mid afternoon we found ourselves near the mouth of a narrow channel.
Ford’s Terror is a perfect place to explore by Zodiac. A huge system of tidal channels is fed and drained through a constricted throat. To enter and depart, Zodiacs must navigate through rushing rapids. Once past, waterfall after waterfall gushed, trickled, coursed and cascaded into the greenish waters. Clouds and mist hung upon the slopes. The afternoon was magical and a fitting finale to an extraordinary week.
