Tracy Arm

The morning light was a dull gray as the Sea Bird made her way east into one of the most spectacular fjords in the world. Trees were diminishing, the cliffs growing, and the brash ice becoming more prevalent the farther east we moved until finally the first glimpse of its source was had. The Sawyer glaciers have spilled a great deal of ice as they retreat farther and farther back. We loved the morning chance to explore the face of South Sawyer Glacier in Zodiacs. Being able to wind our way around the large and small icebergs was quite an adventure. Chances for photography and quiet thought were made available to us so we could take in the sights and sounds of the ever moving ice.

The ship was repositioned during lunch, this time closer to the smaller North Sawyer Glacier so we could have an even more intimate chance in the ice. Our kayaks were put down and a paddle was enjoyed by many as the sun began to burn through the clouds and dappled light made the ice come alive.

After our day long ice adventure the ship made her way towards the mouth of Tracy Arm. A group of killer whales was spotted and a slow approach showed that they may have been hunting harbor seals. A quick glimpse of pink in the water showed just how efficient these killers of whales can be.

It was quite a beginning to our week in Southeast Alaska.
