Pond Island, Kasnyku Falls

We woke this morning circumnavigating along Chatam Strait in the crystal calm waters of Southeast Alaska. We anchored in Kelp Bay shortly after breakfast, at a place called Pond Island. This island has an incredible beaver dam that we hiked to, seeing deer tracks and bear scat. Beautiful light was streaming through the cedar trees as we trekked up to the dam. It was amazing to see that the beavers have made it even bigger this year, increasing the size of the pond and therefore flooding the trail!

It was the perfect day for kayaking as well. The sun was shining, the wind was calm and the water was glassy. It is so peaceful to be out on the water with no direction and nothing to disturb your thoughts. The whole scene was surreal from the sky and the landscape above to the water and the jellyfish below.

This was a waterfall of a day! After our morning operations we voyaged along Baranof Island stopping briefly at Kasnyku falls. Thanks to Linda Burback we learned how fast the trees in Alaska grow. Apparently all you have to do is stare into the rushing waterfall for about ten seconds and then quickly fix your gaze upon the trees to either side and then they just shoot up before your eyes! Looking down from the falls by the water’s edge, we even saw a mink scurrying along.

As we ventured back down Chatam Strait in the early afternoon, we were joined by many Dall’s porpoise, six of which came really close! Soon after that sighting we entered Red Bluff Bay, which is a most stunning place to visit. The trees are very close on either side, and since the water was calm, the reflections were amazing. We slowly made our way through the bay, seeing gorgeous waterfalls throughout! The sun was out, the scenery amazing; it was a wonderful afternoon to relax on deck.
