This was the day on our trip that we’d been waiting for. We woke to a thick, warm fog covering the glassy waters on our way to Idaho Inlet. Even before breakfast we spotted our first marine wildlife of the day- sea otters! They were cute and playful and not at all scared by our vessel coming through. They stayed with us all the way through out breakfast and into our first morning excursions!
There were many morning options today so the group split up and went their separate ways. The fog cover had still not lifted which made the Zodiac ride to the cool and mysterious beach. Some went out kayaking around Shaw Island, with the feel that they were the only person around, as you couldn’t see very far and the sky was the same color as the water! Others went for an adventurous hike up to a waterfall, through a muskeg, bushwhacking through the wilderness of Chichagof Island. Others stayed by the waters edge looking for intertidal creatures. They were not disappointed for they found sea stars, sea anemones, eels and more!
After lunch the fog finally cleared and we got our first sun-filled day! We sailed past the Inian Islands to hear and see the Stellar sea lions calling out to us on one of the haul outs. We then made our way out to sea looking for some more marine wildlife. We were not disappointed when late in the afternoon we ran into about five or six humpback whales! They were fluking, tail flopping, diving and playing around! The whole scene was magnificent. As one guest mentioned to me, “Even if this were a painted picture, I still wouldn’t think it was real.” Seeing the sun, the trees, the snowcapped mountains and the whales, I couldn’t have said it better myself. This was just another amazing Southeast Alaskan day!
