Genovesa Island
This paradisiacal little island was at its best today. Genovesa Island with only 5.5 square miles is home for an incredible number of birds. It is estimated that over one million birds carry on with their lives peacefully on the island. This week we have with us onboard an avid group of enthusiastic photographers. Can you just imagine all the amazing photo opportunities we had today? Well equipped with lenses, cameras, rolls of film, flash cards, hopes and skills our photo expedition started very early capturing on film or digitally the beautiful critters that inhabit Genovesa Island.
At six o’clock in the morning we headed to the island. Light conditions were spectacular; the first morning sunrays always add magical warmth to pictures. Frigate birds with their brilliant red pouches inflated to the top were certainly favorites. Colorful swallow-tailed gulls were next to the frigates in popularity. The exquisite combination of black, red, white and grey gives this endemic bird an air of elegancy that is hard to beat. Praising commentaries were heard everywhere. The joy could be felt floating in the air
After breakfast we went on land once again. More chances to photograph, this time with different light conditions. Great, refreshing snorkeling before lunch was next. In the afternoon after an illustrative photography lecture we went to land once again. Some groups spotted the elusive short-eared owl on land. Some others spotted a pod of bottlenose dolphins from the Zodiacs. More fun, more enthusiasm, more admiration, wow! The whole day has been a big highlight. Genovesa Island imprinted in our minds unforgettable memories; memories so strong, that we will keep them in our hearts forever.
