Fernandina Island
This fantastic island is one of the most pristine islands found in the whole world. Fernandina Island, due to its remoteness, youth, and intrinsic beauty, is considered to be the jewel on the crown of the Galápagos archipelago.
Two days ago, a friend of mine asked me the following question: In your opinion, what are five to six must-see spots if you are thinking about taking that “classic” Galápagos cruise? Included in my answer, as one of these top fabulous places that you cannot miss while visiting Galápagos, was Punta Espinoza on Fernandina Island. This location is truly a very special one. Today, it was not the exception. Some of the highlights were watching a huge pod of common dolphins leaping cheerfully out of the water (while we were having lunch in the dining room), snorkeling with the highly endangered Pacific green turtles, and witnessing a great show that involved several marine birds. Galápagos penguins and brown noddy terns were trying to steal fish from diving brown pelicans. While the pelicans were draining water out of their pouches, the other birds were trying to obtain an easy catch. Noddy terns precariously balancing on top of the pelicans’ heads was both an amusing and delightful event.
If I have to summarize in few words the big array of admiration and excitement that a visit to Fernandina Island provokes in our visitors, I would probably use the next paragraph. Picture yourself being immersed in the most beautiful nature paradise you can imagine: a dream-like place where breathtaking volcanic landscapes merge in an artistic way with the blues of the water surrounding the entire place. Just add incredibly approachable critters carrying out their lives on this unusual physical setting. The whole composition is so picturesque that it could be a source of inspiration for dreams and hopes of a hypothetical world where all the species on Earth can live in peace and harmony. Fernandina Island represents that utopical place where you can imagine how the world is supposed to be and how the world should be. Lets’ keep dreaming, because one way or another, dreams can come true. At least here in the Galápagos, they are coming true every single day.
