Santa Cruz Island

Today we enjoyed so much our time on this island! We were amazed by the Galápagos giant tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Center and by their breeding programs. All of this effort goes to one main goal: to save these endemic and unique species and restore their populations to their original islands.

After walking through the Charles Darwin Center we walked into the town of Puerto Ayora which is the most populated town in Galápagos. We found along the main avenue the fishermen’s dock. They were selling some fresh fish and brown pelicans and lava gulls were patiently waiting for the chance to take some.

The weather was definitely pleasant for everyone. After all the shopping some hiked to the restaurant and some rode on bicycles while enjoying the magnificent view around the highlands. We saw extensive native and endemic forests, and the agricultural zone with many different crops, such as bananas, coffee, oranges, tangerines, lemons, mangos, papayas, etc.

After a delicious lunch, we went further up to the highlands in to the Scalesia Forest, to visit the Gemelos and the most incredible variety of plants covered by epiphytes and finches of different kinds. Later we came to this outstanding place where we were surrounded by Galapagos giant tortoises in their natural habitat. We were also surprised by this little friend, the Vermillion fly catcher that was hopping around us and the tortoises, and gave us a complete show on how to catch moths and other insects while flying and still being beautiful. We had not only a nice time but unforgettable too. Hope you enjoyed as well.
