Bartholomew Island

We have had a great expedition. We have seen whales, dolphins, marine iguanas, waved albatrosses, gulls, boobies and many more animals. As we traveled this week, everyday seemed to get better and better.

This morning when we woke up, we saw the beautiful landscape of Bartholomew Island as the sun was coming up. Three groups went to the early outing at 6:30 a.m. where we had the chance to explore this beautiful, almost moonlike, island. With spatter cones on one side, lava tunnels on the other and pioneer plants scattered around, this island seemed to be out of a story book.

Besides enjoying the beautiful scenery of Bartholomew, we got some pre-breakfast exercise as we climbed up more than 300 steps to the highest point of the island (114meters). From the top the view was spectacular; we got to see one of the most astonishing and famous landscapes of the Galápagos Pinnacle Rock. This rock has been photographed by thousands of visitors and even used in movies. After resting a little bit, we returned to the ship and enjoyed a delicious breakfast.

At around 9:00 a.m., we went out again to explore another part of the island. Some of us took a walk to a beach where marine turtles nest. We strolled on the golden sand, stumbling over many beautiful sally light foot crabs, and plovers. We had to duck as a curious juvenile Galápagos hawk flew low over our heads.

Next it was time to get into the water or to take a beautiful ride on the glass bottom boat. The snorkelers had an excellent time swimming with sea lions, marine turtles, marine iguanas and even Galápagos penguins. This morning was certainly a morning to remember.
