It was trying to find something to eat, and it suddenly stopped and started to show hunting behavior. It looked like a rock, not moving for about 15 minutes, and then it put its bill into the water very fast and grabbed a small fish: a baby surgeonfish. The fish was trying to escape, but the heron moved its beak very fast and swallowed the fish alive. Then it washed its beak and drank a little water to finish lunch. It was a spectacular show, right on the shoreline of one of the Galapagos Islands.

The things that you can find when you sit and observe the landscape are just incredible. This afternoon I was settled on a beautiful organic sand beach in Gardner Bay (Española Island) and I saw a very small heron, the endemic lava heron (Butorides (Ardeola) sundevalli), walking along the seashore.
