Isabela and Fernandina Islands

The emerging light of the morning hit the uppermost ridge of Wolf Volcano, creating an incredible contrast that made the dramatic lava shapes of the flanks glow. The thin cloud around the top, gave this giant a Saturnian aspect.

At this tropical location, it was surprising to find that the wind was cold and as we headed westward towards our destination. The frigid air kept us alert during our successful whale watching activity. The Bryde’s whale appeared quite early and even though it showed itself briefly, and we were delighted by its presence.

With the awesome landscape and the volcanoes, the day proceeded with no small amount of gratification for our souls. The Zodiac ride at mid-morning offered a chance to go snorkeling. Dozens of sea turtles were feeding at this location, and we enjoyed the privilege of swimming with these native reptiles.

The island of Fernandina presents a unique geological feature. In 1974 an uplifting event changed the geography of this place, converting the dock that was built for touristic activities into an unusable item at low tide. Such was the case today, but knowing how to deal with this we disembarked on Punta Espinosa and still had a lot of fun.

The tepid afternoon and the solitude we experienced proved to be a catalyst for getting in touch with our surroundings.
