Santa Cruz Island

While approaching the island of Santa Cruz from the upper deck of the Islander we can appreciate the many colors of Puerto Ayora displayed like a palette even though lightly veiled by misty rain. The island is our destination for today and we are expectant with the coming proximity to the giant tortoises, the emblems of the Galápagos, at the Charles Darwin Research Station.

There is so much to see and learn about these gentle reptiles and time passed by so fast that all of a sudden we had to retreat and move to the highlands to be fed again - not that we would complain. The morning gave us many precious moments we won’t easily forget.

During our expedition in the afternoon, we communed with no less than 50 tortoises in the wild as well as with several different species of finches and other land birds. The forest in the highlands is lush and green, charged with the mist that makes us recall the dense tropical rainforest of the mainland.

The sounds of nature come from all around filling our minds and making us wonder; how many places remain like this one on planet earth? No many for sure. That thought provides a great satisfaction to everyone.

Six in the afternoon, we are back on board and leaving the island of Santa Cruz. Many feelings stay behind and a new set of expectations are rising for the days to come.
