This Tuesday we arrived at the island of Floreana. A mist, locally known as “garua,” covered the island, giving us a very nice welcome to the Enchanted Islands. Floreana is a very mysterious island, where a number of people died or disappeared over the centuries. Before breakfast we landed in Punta Cormorant, where we had a lovely walk. We saw marine turtle nesting sites as we enjoyed the green beach. Then a flamingo flew in the lagoon while we were watching. As we returned back to the ship for breakfast, we felt happy for the wildlife sightings and for being alive.
Floreana was the first island in the Galapagos to be colonized by people, who brought with them animals, such as goats and rats. Their presence caused the destruction of certain ecosystems, such as the cactus forest. Eventually, some species that depended on such ecosystems became extinct, like the Floreana mockingbird. Yet, a small population of a hundred survives in the neighboring island of Champion. Our Zodiacs took us there to search for and photograph these elusive birds. Photography was amazing this morning with great light conditions and many wildlife opportunities!
Then a few brave guests decided to go snorkeling in the 71 degrees F water. Along the shores, we found sea lions, stingrays, and many different species of colorful fish.
In the afternoon, we visited the famous Post Office Bay, with its wooden barrel that has served as an informal mail system for more than two centuries. As past visitors have done, we put out letters in the barrel and took out letters that we promise to hand-deliver when we get home.
Zodiac rides and kayaking ended a fantastic afternoon. For all its mystery, Floreana Island was the perfect place to enjoy one of the last paradises in the world!
