We had the great fortune today to visit the Hakai Institute and surrounding parklands on Calvert Island. We have travelled approximately halfway up the Inland Passage in British Columbia, Canada, between Seattle and Ketchikan. We explored the beautiful forests, coves, and beaches; we also toured the Calvert Ecological Observatory of the Hakai Institute. Hakai is a unique collaboration of scientists and researchers from a variety of academic institutions and regional First Nations groups. They are working to understand all aspects of the coastal environment, including oceanography, anthropology, and marine and terrestrial ecology — especially emphasizing the long-term perspective in understanding humanity’s knowledge of the world we live in.
Our good luck with weather continued, and we were comfortably able to hike, kayak, take boat tours, and explore the Hakai facilities throughout this outstanding day.
