A beautiful sunrise welcomes us to this new day. The waters of Kyle of Akin are glassy calm. As we walk out on the decks, the air feels balmy. Breakfast is enjoyed, and soon afterwards, we head for morning activities: a short walk to Pockton viewpoint or a visit to Eilan Donan Castle.
The walk to Pockton viewpoint takes us through the streets of Kyle of Lochalsh and then through a wooded area to the viewpoint, where we are able to see all around us, including the Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye.
The castle of Eilan Donan is very impressive. To access it, we take a short walk over a bridge. This strategically situated island was ideal for a fortified structure. It dates to the 13th century, and it underwent many adjustments to construction until it was blown up by government forces during the Jacobite uprising in 1719. It was reconstructed to its former glory in the early 20th century.
By lunchtime, we all return to the ship. During our meal, the Lord of the Glens sets sail for Armadale, our afternoon destination.
In Armadale, we visit the castle ruins, the wonderful botanic gardens, and the Donald Museum. This area was home to the MacDonald family. Beautiful weather allows us to fully enjoy the plants, particularly the rhododendrons in full bloom. Songbirds fill the air with their delightful sounds.
After a short visit to the little craft shops at the end of the pier, we set sail for Inverie. After dinner, we have the chance to hear Jackie Robertson speak about the Knoydart Community. We learn more about the community’s rich history and how they run their affairs.
It has been a great start to our Scottish adventure.
