Martin Klein

Dr. Martin A. Klein is an author and professor of history at the University of Toronto. His numerous published works focus on the social and economic history of Africa, including slavery. His many books include Perspectives on the African Past and Slavery and Colonial Rule in Africa. He is the namesake of the recently established Martin A. Klein Prize in African History, which is conferred annually through the American Historical Association, recognizing the most distinguished work of scholarship on the history of continental African history published in English during the previous calendar year.

Dr. Klein received his B.S. in journalism and political science at Northwestern University, with an M.A. and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago. He's written eight books on Africa.  Among his many honors are honorable mention, Herskovits Prize, African Studies Association for best book in African Studies, 1999; Distinguished Africanist Award, African Studies Association, 2002; and the American Historical Association named the prize for best book in African history the Martin A. Klein Prize.
