Carmen Guzman

Born in Quito, Ecuador’s capital, Carmen studied Biology in college and majored in Ecuadorian fauna. After graduating, she had the opportunity to go to the Ecuadorian rain forest where she worked as a naturalist guide for five years. In this capacity, she worked with different companies in various areas of her country's portion of the Amazon basin. During this time, her love for nature deepened, and she developed a profound interest in the complex ecological interactions taking place in this fascinating environment.

From her initial passion for the rain forest, Carmen decided to broaden her horizons and explore new and different ecosystems. This led her to the Galápagos Islands. Carmen took part in the 1995 guide training program and since 2000 she has been working as a core Naturalist with Lindblad Expeditions. She finds it wonderful to experience the complete indifference of the island's unique fauna to our presence, (so unlike the situation in the rain forest), and witness their behaviour and interactions. Her interest in conservation and her experience in the field led her to obtain a Masters’ degree in Ecotourism and Management of Natural Protected Areas with the Quito’s Technological University.

Carmen has a Doctorate in Biology as well. She is fluent in English, Spanish and French and designed a new career for the largest University in Ecuador, the Central University. The new career is a Master program in Environmental Management and Administration of Natural Protected Areas. Training in this new field will provide Ecuador with professionals who are prepared to lead the conservation efforts of the country. Carmen did this research with her husband, Carlos Romero, who is also a Lindblad Expeditions naturalist.
